Herman C. was born in 1907 in Rushford, MN. He married Elsie Flatland of Glenwood Twp. They had 5 daughters: Wanda Jean, Donna, Caryl, Beverly and Linda. Herman farmed west of Mabel, MN and also drove a truck. He loved to box and took great pride in his boxing ability which some people said was “considerable." Anton would coach Herman from the sidelines, calling out “Take him home, Herman!” Many of the matches would end with a knockout. These boxing matches were advertised in the Decorah newspapers.

Arnold O. was born in 1910 in Canton, MN. He married Mabel Evenson. They had 7 children: LaVonne, Kenneth, Lyle, Dorothy, Arlen, Ron and Aria. The family farmed around Decorah for a number of years. Arnold later moved to Cedar Rapids, IA.

Stendel, Earl and Arlene (Bodensteiner)

Earl Everett Stendel married Arlene Bodensteiner 6 Jun 1961 at St. Frances DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian. Arlene, was the daughter of Greg and Agnes (Balk) Bodensteiner.

Earl and Arlene live on and farm, the Century Farm which was homesteaded by William Burns, the greatgrandfather of Earl. Arlene also works at the Livingood Supper Club in Frankville.

They are the parents of 4 children: Scott married Elaine Steinlage on 5 Jun 1981 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. They are farming near Decorah. Their children are: Dawn Marie and Dana Lynn. Pamela married Douglas Buddenberg on 10 Oct 1981 at St. Frances DeSales Catholic Church, Ossian. They live in rural Bloomfield Twp. Doug is employed at John Deere in Elkader. Pam is employed at South Winneshiek School in Calmar. Their children are: Brittany Ann , Bridget Sue and Blake Douglas. Kimberley Sue married David Paul on 4 Apr 1986 at St. Frances DeSales Catholic Church. Their children are: Nicholas Charles, Stephanie Sue and Lindsey Lea. Karla Kay married Kenneth H. Hanson on 26 Aug 1989 at the Methodist Church in Elgin. Their children are: Chelsey Kay and Collin Henry.

Ole Stengrimson was born 10 Sep 1854 in Hadeland, Norway. He came to the United States at the age of seven. He went to live with his grandfather Ole Erickson when he was twelve years old. He later bought his farm.

He married Kari Horgen. They had two children: a son who died at birth in 1890 and a daughter, Selma (1 May 1891-1972). She never married. Ole and Kari died the same day, 26 Dec 1943, Ole in the morning and she in the evening.

Melvin Theodore Stephens (7 Nov 1885-6 Dec 1960) was born the son of Eric and Regina Stevens in Glenwood Twp. He was the eldest of 12 children. He was confirmed in the Glenwood Lutheran Church and attended rural school through the 6th grade. He worked as a farm hand in the area until 1914.

Josephine (Buer) Stephens (11 Oct 1891-6 Jun 1987) was born to John and Johanna Buer also in Glenwood Twp. She attended rural school through the 8th grade and was confirmed in the Pontopiddan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Twp. She came to Decorah and worked in a number of households as maid, cook and babysitter.

Then she went to work as assistant cook for the Luther College Boarding Club where several young women worked in the kitchen and lived on the campus. They were specifically instructed not to speak to any of the students of this college for men nor entice them in any way from their studies. Josephine and her co-workers were incensed by this order. They promptly packed their trunks, dragged them into the hallway and announced that if they weren’t good enough to speak to the students, they weren't good enough to cook for them. They could cook their own meals. The order was rescinded.
